So with the Terminators happily greenstuffed. It was time to start colouring them in.
I’m not blessed with a large amount of free time. So when I’m planning to paint, I do actually do a lot of planning. I generally think a lot about painting when I’m doing the day to day stuff. Good lady PlantOldhammer is often asking what I’m deep in thought about. I’m sure she thinks it’s deep and meaningful stuff. But most of the time I have to reply...’Ork skin’, or ‘I’m wondering what kind of wheels I can use on a scorcher’. She generally sighs and rolls her eyes. But bless her, she still likes to ask. Maybe one day she hopes I’ll say, ‘I’ve invented nuclear fusion’ or something. Anyway, before painting, I plan. I mull it over. I use Pinterest extensively to find reference and if the mood takes me, I even do moodboards and consult colour wheels. Yes. I am that nerdy.
With the Captain mini in particular, I wanted to ensure I did a good job. My greenstuff abilities are pretty much on the noob side, so I knew I’d have to use the paint to hide the dodgy sculpting.
One of the reasons I’d gone for Sons of Horus for this project, was the glimpses of the supposed new Horus Heresy boxset floating around the Internet.
Now obvs, I’m an Oldhammer kinda guy. But these images do press all my buttons. Why? Well, as we all know, the Oldhammer Horus Heresy, the one given life in 1989 with Adeptus Titanicus and then Space Marine. Was full to the brim with hulking Mark 6 marines, kicking each other’s arses and generally looking badass. So when I saw these new boxset images, I suddenly got a major dose of the nostalgias.
Also, a whole new excuse to paint Sons of Horus. And that new minty green colour is looking pretty swish too! But before I jumped straight into my new terminator captain. I wanted to make sure I could recreate that minty, Sons of Horus green. I’m not one to run out and buy loads of new paints. I’m oldschool. I’ll mix my own...like we used to do! 😁
So I decided to grab a spare Mark 6 fella that I had hanging around, and I experimented with getting that green right.
Once I was happy, I also experimented with the homemade decals. Just to get an idea of how to apply them and if they were any good. Here’s the result...
Close enough I reckon. This was a simple paint job really. This was Kabalite green over a Mechanicus Standard grey. Washed with Nuln oil and then I then mixed White Scar into the Kabalite, and slowly built up the minty hues. Then I slapped some Black Templar contrast on the shoulder & backpack & bolter. Finally, I picked out the edges using first Dawnstone and then Administratum Grey. Last touch is a spot of Corax white on some corners to make them go piiing!! So a quick and dirty paint job really. But one I learned lessons from.
Lesson one being...it needs an opposing colour to the green. And lesson two, I needed some decal softener for the shoulder pads!!
Next time...actually painting the Terminator! Promise. It’s coming!
